      La découverte des mécanismes de la lecture Ce livre présente pour la première fois la découverte des mécanismes complets de la lecture des systèmes alphabétiques, en particulier du français. Jusqu’à présent ces mécanismes étaient mal connus. Leur découverte est un événement historique, culturel et éducatif. On sait enfin comment on fait pour lire et surtout comment l’écolier apprend à lire ! Un progrès pour l'apprentissage de la lecture du français Les écoliers peinent à apprendre à lire le français, beaucoup échouent. En fin d’école primaire 20 % ne comprennent pas un texte simple, ceux dits dyslexiques ne savent même pas déchiffrer. On attribue ces difficultés à l’orthographe complexe du français et une pédagogie freinée en partie par des points de recherche non résolus. L’ouvrage apporte une réponse claire à ce problème, présentée sous une forme pédagogique et didactique, de sorte que les enseignants du primaire et les intervenants en cas de difficultés sévères, vont disposer d'un outil de travail efficace, théorique et pratique, qui va faciliter leur tâche et abaisser sensiblement l'échec scolaire. Les frontières du savoir actuel sur la lecture On a beaucoup appris sur la lecture mais il subsiste des questions importantes, aux frontières de ce savoir : comment justifier la méthode de lecture ? Par quels stades précis passe l’élève et comment s'opère ce passage ? Comment lit-on de manière automatique, par exemple ces lignes-ci ? Il décrit de façon systématique et détaillée son apprentissage"normal" ou dyslexique, en expliquant son évolution. La première partie du livre projette une lumière nouvelle sur des débats clés : méthode de lecture (syllabique, globale), opacité de l'orthographe, comparaison avec le chinois, limite des théories et expériences connues, nature de la dyslexie. La deuxième partie, essentielle, présente les stades de la lecture en expliquant leurs mécanismes. Le fil rouge est le suivant : deux processus, en mutuelle interaction, sont la source des automatismes en lecture et suffisent à déterminer et expliquer tout le reste. Partant de là, l’ouvrage dresse une échelle exacte des stades (qui permet d’évaluer aisément l’écolier). Puis détaille chaque stade, du début du déchiffrage jusqu'à la lecture automatique des mots (ou lecture globale), avec ses caractéristiques (critères, types d’erreurs, stratégies de l’eleve, difficultés, etc.).
